The party was over today, I had to leave Telluride and head back to the trail this afternoon. Colorado has to go into work for a bit, and when he got back, we watched Sportscenter to confirm that Lance Armstrong had won his 5th straight Tour de France. Nice job!
After that, Colorado drove me to Silverton and we had lunch before he had to get back to Telluride. I only have 72 miles left to Durango, so I hung around town for a bit trying to kill some times. Silverton is a pretty cool old mining town. The main drag is filled with buildings that havn’t changed much in 100 years. It’s a total tourist trap now, though, as there are more “authentic Indian merchandise” stores than anything else.
Anyway, the afternoon storm had dumped a lot of rain and it was beginning to clear out. I figured it was time to hit the trail, so I started to hitch out of town around 4:00. I got a ride quickly and arrived here at the lake within a few minutes. That’s when a second storm started to build. Fortunately I was able to get everything setup and my dinner started before the downpour began. That’s two major storms today, not a good trend for a backpacker.
I can only hope that this week is better weather-wise that this weekend has been. Otherwise, it is going to be a long 72, er 71.4, miles to Durango.
