September 22: Virgin River Gorge Campground

Travel Day

Ahh… another long Memorial Day Weekend in Las Vegas- well, sorta. Since last year when I flew to Vegas and spent a few days hiking around Zion National Park, I have been itching to get back out to this area for more exploring. What better time for coming back out here than one year later?

For once, however, this trip is not a solo endeavor. Diane, agreed to accompany me to Bryce Canyon National Park for 4 days of hiking. Our plan is to start with a two-day, one-night backpack of the Under-The-Rim Trail, followed by a series of day hikes in the northern area of the park. This area is supposed to be more spectacular but does not allow overnight camping, so we will be tented out at a car camping spot inside the park.

After a somewhat bumpy ride into Vegas, we retrieved our gear (intact!), rented a car and were on our way to southern Utah. It was pretty late by the time we got going, so instead of driving all the way to Bryce that evening we opted for a camping spot in the Virgin River Gorge Campground. Located just off the small piece of highway in Arizona, I stopped here last year so I familiar with the layout. The stars are out and it’s a beautiful desert evening. Things are great and we are hoping for a good day tomorrow.
