Well, it is now 11:30 on a Friday night and I am sleeping next to a picnic table at some random town beach area in New York. How did I end up here, you ask? Well, I left after work today to head for the Adirondacks for a five-day adventure in the High Peaks area. This is my first trip to this area and I am very excited. I have heard great things about the Adirondacks, and I love exploring new areas, especially since I have hiked most of the White Mountains in my own state.

Special thanks to Mike P. for giving me some good routes to follow and some suggestions. He even spent time with me on the phone going over distances since I didn’t get the guidebook until this afternoon.

I knew it was over a four-hour drive to upstate New York so I planned on getting a motel for the night so that I would be well rested. I pulled into a good size New York town just over the Vermont border and found just such a motel. However, after getting a meatball sub at the local pizza joint, I learned of a Super 8 motel up the road in Ticondaroga (yes, that Ticondaroga) which also happened to be 340 or so minutes closer to where I would be starting the hike tomorrow.

So Up the road I drove, and there was the Super 8, just where I was told it would be. Only one problem, the motel was not a motel, but rather a hotel. This meant no animals, hence no dogs, hence no Bear. At this point I was pretty tired, but I moved on and headed closer to the trailhead. Eventually, I found signs for lodging, but they were just old motels, long since boarded up. I found nothing suitable except for this small town beach. It works, I just threw down my ground cloth and sleeping bag, and now I am off to sleep so I will be fresh for tomorrow.
