Oct 02: Battell Shelter

Miles Today : 14
Total Miles : 49.3

Another great day today. I got up nice and early with Bill and Emily. We were treated to a nice sunrise over Skylight Pond. After some photos and breakfast, we packed up and headed back out to the LT, in our own directions, with a good start to the day. Today will not be as easy as the last few days, however. Everything hurts right now, and I was moving slow, but Bear was moving slower. I would find out later that he was hiking with an injured paw all day.

A few wooded humps and a couple of partial views on a hazy day was all that was to be had on this day of the trip. Just before dropping into Lincoln Gap, the trail goes up and over a rocky, granite knob. This knob provided some views of the area, but what was most remarkable was all the bright Mountain Ash berries. Their bright red color in contrast to the cold, gray granite was remarkable

Two more miles after that and were had arrived, Battell Shelter. We are over half way up Mt Abraham, the first 4000 footer of the trip for me. The shelter is at a nice spot with a bubbling brook within earshot. There are four other people here tonight, and we stayed up a while talking trail and drinking a warm beverage of some sorts. The temp feels good, the shelter is adequate and hopefully my legs and Bear's paw will be up to the task tomorrow.
