Just another great day to be out on the AT. This morning, we got an intentionally late start from Stratton. We woke up to a thick fog, and wanted to see if it was going to burn off. Sure enough, just around 10, the fog lifted from summit like a curtain going up for a performance. The view we got from the firetower was magnificent! There is no better way to start the day off than with a great view.
That being said, the rest of the day was pretty boring. Save for one rocky outcropping that showed a view of Manchester, VT, there was nothing to take note of. We cruised through some bogs, saw lush forest and some interesting plants, but mostly just hiked.
Bromly Mtn changed all that. The climb was short, maybe two miles, but steep. Also, since there is no water at the top, I had to carry an extra 12 pounds of stuff with me. Bromly is a 3200 foot ski mountain with a warning hut on top. There are no amenities here, just a roof with 4 walls. There is also a nice observation tower which, since most of the earlier clouds had cleared, provided us with the best views in Vermont yet! Also here is Duct Tape, a South-bounder.
We all hung out at the top and watched the sun set behind the Aderondicks in NY. It was one of the best this trip. It was very cold up top, so none of us stuck around too long. We are looking to go back up later, though, and hope to get glimpses of the meteor shower tonight.
Now I am very content. I have a warm place to sleep on a good mountain with a great view. Tomorrow, we may actually attempt that 20 mile day, but who knows. The mountains are so great, and there is so much to see. I am in no rush at all. This is without a doubt the good life.
