July 13: Port Clinton/Town Pavillion

Miles Today : 23.3
Miles to Katahdin : 968.5

Well, early this morning Jim loaded us up in his Dodge Ram and drove us from his house back to route 501. He even swung by the local hardware store so I could get a rubber stopper for my hiking stick. At 8:30 we were off on the trail.

Let me say that today was the day we found PA rocks! Every step required planning and good placement, otherwise a rock would jab me in the side of the foot. I hiked a few minutes behind DB and Colorado for most of today enjoying the woods and the occasional views into the Valley.

After 9 hours and many missteps on the rocks, I finally arrived into Port Clinton. This place is a very tiny little town, but there is a post office , a small pub and a large pavillion where hikers can sleep for free.

A bunch of hikers were up at the Port Clinton bar eating french fries , drinking Yeungling and watching the all-star game. In attendence, DB, Colorado, Jambone and Animal Cracker. A little while later, in walks Jim! He brought Irma and Little Dipper (husband and wife) into town. Very cool. By this time, the locals have cleared out and the hikers have the run of the place.

Well, the evening wound down eventually and as I was about to leave, Jim grabs me and as I am saying goodbye and tells me he is gay. Bizarre to say the least, but he wanted me to know that all gays are not the stereotypical "fruit-loops". He even tried to get married but called it off after 7 years.

Well, with that revalation, I headed back to the pavillion. Here right now Irma is playing on his guitar and singing as well. He is very good , almost Dave Matthews-ish. I cannot think of a better night on the trail. In memory of old friends and new, in an easy town listening to great music. What rocks?!?
