At this point, I have been home for over a week. Still, I find that every day I wake up in pain! I still have odd bumps and bruises that my body has not got around to repairing. I actually went to a doctor since I have been home, if you can believe that! Turns out that I have a severely bruised foot, though not a stress fracture, and I contracted Giradia! Turns out that could be part of the reason that I felt I was burning out. While most of the symptoms of the parasite were not apparent while I was hiking, it still makes you sick and weak. Looking back on my journal entries, I have been hiking with this thing since May 7th at least!
The day started with Michelle and I having a nice big send off breakfast at Bumpy's, my Dad's restaurant (plug, plug.). (ed. note Bumpy's restaraunt is located in beautiful downtown Marlborough, MA for those interested) Nothing like a big plate of cinnamon raisin french toast to start the morning.
At this point, I am getting cabin fever and desperately want to return to the trail. I got a phone call from Drive-By, and he is doing well, and gave me the crap I deserved to bailing out. Anyway, the plan is for me to finish fighting off this Giardia thing, and get back out there. I will be skipping a good section of the trail so that I can get to Maine before Baxter State Park ( home of Mt. Katahdin) closes and so that I can return to work. Sure, my shot at a thru-hike is blown, but there is still more than half of the trail out there for me to walk, and I am looking forward to it.
