6/30/99 Dahlgren Camping Area

Miles Today : 17.1
Miles to Katahdin : 1145.1

Ouch, ouch, ouch! Man I forgot what it is like to hike fast again. Granted, it was only a 17 mile day, but we did it from 11:30 to 5:30!

It started to rain this morning and everyone at the KOA got a late start. After packing it was on to the local diner where I ate breakfast for less than $3! Drive-By, Colorado and I got going finally around 11:30 and we hiked at full-speed. A month ago that would be fine but today, even on this easy Maryland terrain, it was ALMOST too much.

I hung tough for 10 miles to the spot where we took a break. We stopped at a small historical park and tried to Yogi some food from a company picnic to no avail.

We got to the campground early and my feet were killing me. They still have some more toughening up to do before I am back at full speed. Also, here is a group of Boy Scouts who immediately wanted to challenge the thru-hikers to a game of whiffle ball. The battle raged until dark with ATers getting the 17-14 victory!

Tomorrow will be my first 20+ day since leaving the trail, and that should just about put me back in shape. TTFN
