Well, after carefully monitoring the weather reports, Drive-By, Monk, Rick and myself decided to hit the trail around noon. It turned out to be a great decision. The stretch of trail from Newtownd Gap to this shelter is one of the best since it is a long, high ridge walk. The views were great, though a little clouded, and made the 15 miles fly by. My new pack performed very well since most of the weight is now on my hips, where it should be.
We met a South Bend section hiker who told us he had seen Trailhead, who did a 20 miler yesterday....in the thunderstorms!!! Also, he offered to pass a hello to some of the guys behind us on the trail. Nothing too exceptional happened on the trail today, got some great pictures, hiked strong and quickly, stayed dry! I did get to hear some new songbirds today which helped me finish the last climb of the day. Rick is here with me at the shelter (Drive-By and Monk stopped at the last one) along with three section hikers.
Tonight its cold, with a clear sky and I am finishing off my traditional Guinness that I hike in from town. Tomorrow, its out of the Smokies and on to Mountain Momma's!
