4/22/99 Blood Mountain Shelter

Well after a hard day of hiking, I am back on schedule. This "huge" success did come at a price. My feet are a mess. My Limmer boots are breaking in my feet, and its a painful process. I have about five blisters and a couple of numb toes, but all is well.

Didn't meet too many people today, but there are about 5 other guys at the shelter tonight. Did talk to Donna at Goose Gap shelter. She is doing the trail to lose weight and is only going about 5 miles a day. She was in very good spirits after almost passing out last night due to lack of H2O.

WILDLIFE UPDATE:
For those of you who are curious, there have been a few woodpeckers, a bunch of squirrels, moths the size of a half dollar, and a variety of other insects. No bears, deer or coyotes yet (howling has been reported however). Met my first AT fisherman today, equipped with pole and bag of trout. Anyway, the hike up to the shelter was especially difficult, since it was on top of a mountain. AND there was no water here. That means I had to truck an extra liter up to the 1000+ elevation again.

ADDITIONAL NOTES FROM YESTERDAY:
My pack weight with 3 days of food, no water was 40lbs...WHOO-HOO! Also found an almost perfect hiker's stick.

Well that's just about all for today. Legs are really sore. So tomorrow is going to be a nice short day < 10. Sitting here watching the sun go down on top of the highest peak in Georgia, boy I cant wait to get back to work!!! (just kidding SABRE people)

INFO FOR HIKERS:
The terrain here is similar to that of NH, these mountains are unmistakably Appalachian. There are numerous different species of flora, leaving uniave colors of green everywhere. The trails are very different that NH, and it almost angers me how many pointless miles I am walking. Every trail it seems like makes a long route around the side of a hill rather than the simple up and over route that I am used to.

STILL 4/22
OTHER HIKERS:
2 Guys that I was talking to earlier, their names are Conner and Kearston, from Southern Illinois.

Eric hiking to Harper's Ferry, just made it up to the shelter after a 12.3 day. Mike is also here, and he is from MD-Baltimore. I may hike with him since he is doing a 12 mile day tomorrow, more than most this early on.
